The Silver Flood Control for the City of York closed formally at 9.22am on Sunday. I have been asked by many of the police officers involved in the operation to thank, on their behalf, the people of York for their help during the flooding.
Everywhere they went they received support, food, cups of tea and thanks from people who were often in terrible circumstances. We wish all of those who were affected a speedy recovery.
I am sure this very difficult time has helped to strengthen the already firm bonds between the city and its police officers. Thanks to you all.
Chief Superintendent Gary Barnett,

...I congratulate you on the idea of giving 2 Signal Regiment the Freedom of the City, this is an excellent idea and one that is truly deserved.
Our fine city has been devastated by the floods and many people have had their properties severely damaged.
Had it not been for the commendable work of the troops greater damage and misery would have occurred. Their tireless efforts, over many days and nights, is testimony to their endurance in times of trouble.
It is right to honour them for what they have achieved saving lives and property and generally helping the people of York and surrounding areas.
These days people are quick to complain so let's address the balance a little and grant 2 Signals this honour.
Well done lads and congratulations to the Evening Press for coming up with such a good idea.

...I applaud the proposal to grant the Freedom of York City to one regiment (November 11). But as a former Second World War soldier, and one of a family of servicemen, I can do better than that.
All the soldiers will get out of the Freedom is honour - and loads of bull for years to come.
Actions speak louder than words. I, for one, would contribute to a 'thank you fund' if one were to be set up, the proceeds to be divided among all servicemen who took part in the work. Never mind singling out one unit. Show your gratitude with a gratuity.

...Many people deserve praise for helping to fight the flood situation in York and surrounding areas, and the Army has made a huge contribution to the effort, for which many are very grateful.
As the area will be at high risk of flooding in the future, let alone now, there is a strong argument for keeping a substantial Army presence in York.
I know there has been talk of relocating the Army to Edinburgh but with the floods in Yorkshire, I think there is a compelling argument for them to remain here to help us.
