On-loan Stoke City striker Chris Iwelumo came off the bench to make his debut for the final 20 minutes and made a decisive impact having a part to play in Hulme's late winner.
But he later admitted he had nearly put off his arrival at Bootham Crescent a such was the swiftness of his secondment north.
"I was only told on Thursday afternoon that it was on the cards and I did actually say no to it at first because I thought it was a bit rushed," he explained
"I went in and trained on Friday, spoke to Nigel Pearson (first team coach at Stoke) and we had a long chat about it and decided I should come up
"I am here for a month and hopefully I can do a job.
"I have just extended my contract at Stoke but there is a lot of competition among the strikers so this is an experience builder for me.
"I have just got to get used to the speed of the game. It is a lot quicker but I've played 100 minutes first team football this season and scored two goals and hopefully I can repeat that here.
"My main strength is winning the ball and flicking it on in the air but hopefully I am getting better and on the ground as well."
