Staff and regulars at the New Inn, Thornton-le-Dale, got themselves into a right pickle this week with the launch of a rather unusual society.
In what must be a first, the pub can now call itself headquarters of the Thornton-le-Dale Pickled Walnut Society - which attracted 60 honorary members to its first meeting.
The idea to establish the society came about after a few regulars decided to make pickled walnuts, said head chef Ian Valentine.
They proved so popular, he said, that the society evolved from there.
Ian said: "I came across pickled walnuts a few years ago in some of the London clubs, but it is the first time I have seen them up here, and it is certainly the first time I've ever come across a pickled walnut society.
"It was a great night though - I think pickled walnuts are an acquired taste, but the regulars seemed to be enjoying them. They must have tasted all right, as the only food accompaniment they asked for was some bread, roast beef, a bit of cheese and, of course, a few pints of beer."
Further meetings and events are planned for the Pickled Walnut Society. For details, ring the New Inn on 01751 474226.
