A YORK man is angry after a raised grate in the middle of an Acomb road left a tyre on his car ripped to shreds.
Donald Allington, of The Wandle in Chapelfields, was driving along Gale Lane in Acomb when he felt an enormous bump on his front wheel and came to a sudden stop.
"It was pitch black and I had just collected my wife after she had been to see the grandchildren. I was driving very slowly at the time," he said.
"After feeling the knock, I pulled over, and found a great rip in my tyre.
"I went back to look in the road and found that there was a raised grate.
"Apart from being expensive for me, it's very dangerous and if a cyclist or motorbike went over it, it would cause an awful accident."
A spokesman for City of York council said: "Manhole covers and drain covers on roads around York may well have been pushed up because of the flood water running through drains under the roads and pavements.
"We did caution drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to look out for this sort of thing during the floods and, if possible, to avoid using the roads at all.
"Once the floods have subsided, we will be checking roads around the city to prevent incidents like this from occurring again."
