They're an odd couple but not even the floods could separate them.

John Hinderwell and his cockatiel Jack - full name Jack Lemon because of his bright yellow head - are currently living in temporary accommodation together after being forced out of their home last week.

"We had no choice but to move out when the floods came," said John, who is registered disabled with spinal arthritis.

"I live with my carer Mary Mansell who has also had to move out."

John, Mary, Jack and two highly strung Burman cats live together at a house in the Hawthornes, but until the waters recede they are staying at Ashfields Residential Home, Malton.

"Jack is a rescue bird and we've had him for about seven years," said John.

"He is a very sensitive chap and he knows when something is up. But he's happy with his new home, as long as Mary and I are around he doesn't mind one bit.

"The cats are very highly strung and became very distressed when the waters came; they just didn't know what was happening and they were very frightened.

"When the floods came into the bungalow last Friday we simply packed some clothes , grabbed the pets and left.

"The emergency services were absolutely wonderful and helped us get out very quickly. The people at Ashfields have also been very good to us."
