A pubgoer who attacked another drinker with a ball and chain has been jailed for 30 months.

Stephen John Daniel, 22, launched his unprovoked attack as his victim, Paul Gascoigne, was sitting in the Cross Keys pub, Knaresborough, said Joanne Kidd, prosecuting.

The young man ran at him and hit him about the face and head.

"I am going to kill you," Daniel told Mr Gascoigne, said Miss Kidd.

"You swung repeated blows on him and you caused a number of puncture wounds to him," Judge Paul Hoffman told Daniel.

Only two weeks before the attack, magistrates had put Daniel on probation and ordered him to do community service for another assault, York Crown Court heard.

Daniel, of Wentworth Crescent, Harrogate, was jailed for 30 months for causing grievous bodily harm and nine months concurrent for carrying an offensive weapon.

He pleaded guilty to both offences.

The court heard the ball and chain were "pocket-sized".

For Daniel, Alex Offer made allegations about Mr Gascoigne's behaviour towards the attacker on days before the pub attack.

He had not intended to cause serious injury.
