Train services from York to London will be suspended until the middle of next week after an embankment collapsed.
More than three-quarters of a mile of track has been covered by five feet of water and mud after the collapse at Heck, near Selby.
After Railtrack workers have pumped away the water the track will be cleared of mud before and inspection can take place.
A spokesman said engineers would be working over the weekend with a view to opening the line some time next week.
GNER continue to advise passengers not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
