This was the scene today in Lower Ebor Street, York, as a wall prevented floodwaters from the Ouse devastating local homes.
Walls were built to protect the area off Bishopthorpe Road after the 1982 floods. Meanwhile, a last-ditch battle to save up to 80 homes in the nearby Clementhorpe area was hailed as a success by residents.
Last night, we reported how soldiers were building sandbag walls to try to save up to 80 homes from being flooded again.
Firefighters spent all afternoon pumping water back into the Ouse from River Street and Clementhorpe itself, and they were still there this afternoon.
David Brunton, a resident in flooded Lower Darnborough Street, told last night how the floodwaters were prevented from entering his home.
"We had a stream flowing through the house last weekend, but thanks to the tremendous effort of the emergency services there was no repeat of the flooding."
