Villagers brightened up a watery weekend when they pressed ahead with a bonfire party despite the floods.
Though the waters were still lapping at the front door of the Marcia Hotel in Bishopthorpe, landlord Adam Harris said local people had insisted that they should still celebrate.
They had made a way round to the pub garden where the bonfire was so people could get to it, and the garden itself had not been touched by the flood.
They had considered cancelling, but Mr Harris said: "We had such a response from the local people, who said we really needed something to go ahead."
As well as the fireworks they had a food tent with a wide selection of treats.
* Firefighters across North and East Yorkshire had a busy Saturday evening as youngsters marked Mischief Night.
A North Yorkshire fire and rescue spokesman said there were "kids throwing fireworks into letter boxes, into skips anything that will burn".
But no major incidents were reported.
