WE have witnessed genuine heroics in recent days. John McGibbon and Steve Buckley are certainly heroes. They risked their lives to save the victims of a terrible crash on the A64. They admit today they were terrified, but not for one moment did they consider abandoning two young people trapped in their blazing car.

And it is impossible to report all the acts of heroism during the floods. The remarkable endeavours of the emergency services have been supported by a tremendous community spirit. That was exemplified by Dave Hughes, the businessman who abandoned his business to help evacuate pensioners from the rising York waters.
