At least 100 properties were under water across Ryedale today, following flash floods in the wake of yesterday's torrential rain.
Ryedale District Council spokesman Paul Hayward said the flash floods had affected the villages of Hovingham, Nunnington, where a bridge was blocked, and Sinnington, which was completely cut off overnight. He said about 50 of the flooded properties were in Malton, Old Malton and Norton, hit by water from the River Derwent, while the remaining 50 were in villages across the district. In Sinnington, Parish Council clerk Ian Popham said the village had been cut off overnight, but the water had now drained away and traffic was moving in and out.
In Thornton-le-Dale, Parish Council chairman Wilf Garbutt said flooding had been kept at bay with help from Ryedale District Council and their sandbagging teams.
The situation in Hovingham was reported to be "horrendous" after the heavy overnight rain.
