Dogs were evacuated from the RSPCA's Landing Lane animal centre in Clifton this afternoon as river water started getting into the kennels.

Manager Elaine Murdoch said 85 dogs were being offered new homes by two local kennels and by residents who had offered to take one or two for the night.

She said: "I have worked here for 20 years and have never seen it this bad. It's panic stations at the moment.

"In the grounds the water is up to the top of your wellies and now its coming into the kennels.

"All the staff are here helping and the firemen have been wonderful."

She said the cats in the home were much higher up and were OK at the moment.
