An environmental group has backed "visionary" plans to turn the proposed Coppergate II site into a landscaped open space.
York Natural Environment Trust (YNET) gave an enthusiastic welcome to plans for the park at its monthly meeting yesterday.
The idea to turn Castle car park into a public park, rather than a shopping complex, was put forward recently by the York Tomorrow group.
The meeting heard that the Coppergate II proposals would sweep away existing trees and "create a landscape completely out of keeping with the character of the Foss corridor."
YNET members said the Castle Park proposals would protect and enhance local wildlife and create a much-needed public open space.
Chairman Barry Potter said: "Ever since the original Coppergate II proposals, it has been clear that York people do not want development but consider the real destiny of the Castle site to be as a landscaped park. York Tomorrow has come forward with a firm proposition that could make their aspirations a reality."
He added: "This is an opportunity for a majestic, purpose designed, public open space that will provide a fitting setting for both the Foss and Clifford's Tower in a way that Land Securities' parade of shops never can."
