York's Helen Walker saw a tremendous fight-back foiled on the run-in in the England Women's International Bowls Trial at Kingsthorpe, Northampton, last night.
Walker skipped a rink against her three rink-mates from the Home International series in Swansea in April.
On that occasion, Walker operated at number two to Surrey star Doreen Hankin, with Cambridge's Liz Messer at lead and Nottingham's Julie Thomas at number three.
The quartet was England's most successful rink, winning all three of their matches yet in the final Walker was moved out of the four and was replaced by Peterborough's Catherine Popple.
Walker was then given a rink to skip in the trial and found herself taking on Hankin's new four.
At Kingsthorpe, Walker trailed Hankin 12-4 after 11 ends.
Walker who skipped Nottingham's Sue Mart, Taunton's Di Gray and Newcastle's Ann Lennie, charged back, piling up ten shots over the next seven ends to draw level at 14-14, only to see Hankin pounce with a double and single in the shadow of the winning post to edge home 17-14.
