YOU may be aware of the new figures compilied by police forces across the country concerning domestic violence.
We are a York-based charity which, for 25 years, has provided practical and emotional support for women and children experiencing domestic violence, so we welcome any report that highlights these problems.
In 1999 York Women's Aid accommodated 42 women and 51 children within the refuge. It was full most of the year.
Although this is a significant number of women and children, the reality is that we had a further 234 calls from women needing refuge. We managed to find these women and children refuge in other areas of the country.
These statistics only reflect the number of women seeking refuge.
We also received 605 advice and information calls. Considering that only one third of domestic violence incidents are reported, it is plain that as well as domestic violence being a national concern, it is here, in our York communities.
If you are experiencing domestic violence and need advice, refuge space or just a listening ear, please contact us in confidence on York Women's Aid's advice line on 01904 646630 or to access the Outreach service ring 01904 646633.
If you can spare time and would like to volunteer to support women and children ring Sue on 01904 646026.
