The controversial rising bollard in York's Stonebow was today switched off by the City of York Council.
At least five motorists have seen their vehicles damaged by the bollard which rises up to stop all vehicles but taxis, buses and emergency vehicles from entering Stonebow.
The council said it would be investigating the collisions and why vehicles continued to enter Stonebow illegally despite signs and warning lights.
Councillor Dave Merrett, the council's executive member for planning, transport and the environment, said: "By switching off the bollard we will allow ourselves time to understand the present problems and see what further needs to be done to overcome them."
