York City players were pelted with coins, and several away fans were arrested during the match against Hull City at Bootham Crescent on Saturday.
Referee Roger Furnandiz is expected to report complaints from players that they had been hit with coins during the first half of the game.
The police were made aware of the complaints at half-time, and one Hull fan was arrested for throwing a missile.
In all seven away fans were arrested during Saturday's goalless draw - six for drink-related offences.
All seven were due to appear in court today and Supt John Lacy, of York police, confirmed further arrests would be made if CCTV footage later revealed more fans had been involved in the coin-throwing incident.
The trouble at the ground was not repeated in the city centre later in the evening as landlords voluntarily shut their doors to prevent a repeat of last year's trouble.
"We shut around 2pm after a few Hull City fans threatened to wreck the pub," said Ian Taylor, of the Hole in the Wall, High Petergate.
"I decided it wouldn't be worth the risk staying after the fights here last time."
He believed the Hull fans making threats
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said the combination of extra patrols and the heavy rain accounted for the absence of serious problems, although there were a number of minor incidents.
