The chairman of North Yorkshire County Council, Roy Wilson, has sent out a plea to Evening Press readers to support the Poppy Appeal.
"We all remember the sacrifices which were, and still are being made by our Armed Forces so that future generations are able to live in peace and freedom," said Councillor Wilson.
"The appeal is the principle source of funds which directly supports the work of the Royal British Legion.
"The first Poppy Appeal of the new Millennium is under way and I urge all readers of the Evening Press to give their support."
Meanwhile, the Royal British Legion in Stamford Bridge is gearing up for its Remembrance Service Parade.
The procession will take place on Sunday, November 12, starting at 10.45am at the entrance to the Bridlington Road estate.
The parade will march down Main Street, up Church Road, halting at St John's Church. The wreath-laying at the war memorial will be followed by a Remembrance service in the church.
The parade will then re-form, and march via Church Road and Low Catton Road to dismiss at the playing field.
The parade will be headed by the band of 110 Squadron City of York Air Training Corps followed by branch standards, branch and women's section members, and then uniformed youth groups.
