YORK kick-boxing king Paul Lynch has struck gold after a battling display in the European championships.

And the 32-year-old tough guy had to overcome not only the best fighters in Europe but also injury problems picked up in the earlier rounds to lift the treasured trophy.

Lynch, a qualified instructor at his Aegis Kick-Boxing Club in Tang Hall, saw off national champions from Hungary, Italy, Germany and finally Poland to take the World All-style Kick-boxing Organisation European Championship middleweight title.

But it wasn't easy. He said: "I picked up foot and knee injuries in my second fight against the Italian, but I battled on through it and fought against the Pole in the final.

"There was a long delay of at least five minutes before the judges decided the winner, which was very nerve-racking. But apart from the nerves, it was absolutely fantastic."

Lynch was the only Britain to return home with a full-contact medal after the four-day event in Italy, which featured competitors from a record 35 countries.

Among the Britons involved, Lynch's protg, Craig Long, was one of five other fighters from his Aegis club who took part, the other four being from Leeds. And although all five went out in their respective first round ties, Lynch had words of praise for them.

"They enjoyed the experience, which will have done them good. And if it hadn't been for their support I don't think I would have done it. They spurred me on."

Lynch, who has now turned professional, is determined to make his Aegis club the best in Britain, and anyone who wants to compete or train with the club - or sponsor his kick-boxers - should contact him on 07831 303093.

"I've got 100 members in York, where kick-boxing has really taken off, and I'm looking forward to bringing them on," he added.
