RESIDENTS across York are claiming extra income which they could have missed out on, thanks to the city council's Working Families' Tax Credit take-up campaign.
About 50 per cent of more than 250 families who called the council help line found they should be receiving extra money.
Qualification for Working Families' Tax Credit (WFTC) depends on many factors including how many children are in the family unit, how old they are, how many hours the parents work and whether any of the children get disability living allowance or are blind.
Heather Theobold, the council's senior benefits adviser, said: "This is just a small, local take-up campaign aimed at York residents. It's difficult to imagine the thousands of families throughout the whole country who might by missing out on large amounts of money."
She added: "It's also useful to remember that some income is completely ignored, including maintenance, child benefit, disability living allowance, attendance allowance, maternity allowance and statutory maternity pay."
