Dozens of York households did not receive mail today after Royal Mail post bags were stolen.

Today's theft follows a similar incident yesterday when a postman returned from making deliveries to find his bicycle and post bags missing.

Both thefts happened in the Acomb area at about 8.45am.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire police said that in yesterday's incident, the postman left his bicycle and post bag for a short time near St Stephen's Church in York Road, Acomb, and returned minutes later to find it had been stolen. A youth described as white, 16 years old, wearing a blue anorak and black trousers was seen riding from the scene.

He rode off along Beech Avenue towards Danebury Avenue, and the cycle and empty bag were later found in Woodlea Avenue.

Today, a similar theft occurred in Stuart Road, Acomb.

A man, described as white and in his 20s and wearing a grey jacket, was seen riding away on the bicycle.

A Royal Mail spokesman said a "small amount" of mail had been stolen yesterday intended for residents in the Beech Grove area. Concerned customers are asked to contact 08457 740740.
