Third division Haxby United Reserves, who only have been playing in the York Sunday Afternoon League for a month, provided the biggest shock in the first round of the League Cup when they knocked out first division Ebor Bishopthorpe.

Karl Walsh struck the first blow for Ebor but by half-time the young Haxby side had levelled.

Walsh went on to complete a hat-trick to put Ebor 3-1 up but after that it was non-stop Haxby as their extra fitness told and the underdogs roared back to take the game into extra time, thanks to an 89th minute goal.

The extra period belonged to Haxby as they totally dominated without their own goal being seriously threatened and ran out 5-3 winners with goals by Bentham (2), Rylance (2) and Adams.

Another club from the basement division to take first division opponents to extra time were Woodthorpe Warriors who held Drum 4-4 after 90 minutes.

Drum scored twice in extra time to win 6-5 with goals from Thompson (2), Pragnall (2), O'Brien and Elsworth.

Tim Hudson hit four of the Woodthorpe goals, including two from the penalty spo, Burnett netting the fifth.

Third division newcomers Saville AV were another side to force extra time against first division opposition in the shape of York Police.

With the score at 2-2 after normal time even the extra 30 minutes failed to settle the tie and it was only the efforts of the Police goalkeeper, Micky Gowan, who saved two spot kicks that saw Police through.

Clifton Hotel went down 4-1 at second division leaders Fossway, Danny Franklin (2), Alan Whitehead and Lee Weir hitting the all-important goals with Fox replying for Clifton.

Drax United were involved in a tight derby at Black Dog Camblesforth, getting through with a superb strike midway through the first half from full back Pete Cunnington, who evaded several tackles before firing home from an acute angle.

Kevin McDonagh scored the all important goal as Firkin 103 won 1-0 at Gimcrack.

League leaders York Nomads made hard work of their encounter with third division basement club Cygnet before eventually running out 3-0 winners thanks to two goals from Matt Wilson and a late strike from substitute Tony Mason.

Jamie Wilson gave Rookes United an early lead at Clifton Rangers and although Ben Firth hit back five minutes later Rich Beddows restored the visitors lead midway through the half.

Beddows scored again in the 50th and 70th minutes to complete his hat-trick and give his side a 4-1 advantage to which Steve Snowden added to 10 minutes from the end.

A hat trick by Billy Mullen paved the way for Cross Keys' 6-3 win over Central Science Laboratory. Pete Mullen, Steve Musson and Trevor Scott added the other goals while Morris and Quintero (2) replied for the Science Lab.

Newly elected Old Grey Mare inflicted a thumping 17-1 defeat on out-of-form second division side CB United.

Chris Heath led the goal rush with six, Steve Paxton scored a hat-trick, Emlyn Jones and Shaun Sowerby both netted twice and there was a goal each for Steve Rix, Jamie Coulson, Jason Whattam and Rowan Hillary. Bri Stimpson hit the consolation goal for United.

In the all second division clash between Bubwith and Burton Stone, neither normal or extra time could separate the two sides.

With the match eventually ending 3-3, the tie went into a penalty shoot-out, with the ten opening kicks also failing to provide a winner. The contest was eventually settled by sudden death spot kicks, Bubwith going through 7-6.

Rawcliffe United proved too strong for league newcomers, Acomb Athletic, winning 3-0.
