People-power and community spirit are transforming a disused shop on a York estate into a vibrant focus for the neighbourhood.
Residents aged from seven to 70 on the Chapelfields estate are mucking in to redecorate and refurbish the former newsagents in Bramham Road.
When it opens next month, it will be a drop-in centre run by locals, for locals, providing a wealth of information on everything from bus times and job opportunities to drugs and debt.
It will also provide a meeting place for residents of all ages.
Chapelfields Crossroads, which has applied for charitable status, is the brainchild of Rosie Wall.
Through personal experience, she found there was nowhere to turn to for help in the area, so she decided to set up the drop-in centre where others in her position could go.
Rosie said: "It's about getting back the community spirit and providing a focal point for the residents of the estate, whatever their needs.
"We are trying to bring something positive out of the negative."
Local young people have helped to decorate the premises and Rosie said she had been impressed with their commitment to the project.
York MP Hugh Bayley praised the Chapelfields residents for what he called a "brilliant initiative".
He said: "It's exactly what Chapelfields needs to rebuild a sense of community."
