The closure of the climber lane on a section of the A64 York to Malton road near Golden Hill has been named as an advance scheme in the Highways Agency's ten-year strategy.
The decision to close the lane following a series of fatal accidents was announced earlier in the month as an experimental measure and the Highways Agency today confirmed there would be new signing and road markings before April 2001.
The agency has unveiled its ten-year strategy to provide a high quality service for users of national roads with safer more reliable travel and less congestion.
High-tech electronic motorways could allow active management of individual lanes to ease traffic through bottlenecks at peak periods and divert traffic to avoid tailbacks and accidents.
A new system will allow the agency to provide up-to-the-minute information to road users through a national traffic control centre.
Advice will be passed on through electronic signposts, in-car systems and the Internet.
