There was triple cause for celebration for Tadcaster Swim Squad at the 2000 Yorkshire Winter Championships at Sheffield.

Two swimmers returned home as county champions, while another became the first squad swimmer to beat the one-minute barrier for the 100 metres freestyle.

Seventeen swimmers qualified for the competition and gained 48 personal best times from their 55 swims.

Amy Clayden, 13, added the county 100 metres backstroke title to her growing collection.

A personal best of 1-08.31 made her the fastest qualifier, and although marginally slower in the final, the result was never in doubt from the first turn as she gained an emphatic victory.

Another personal best saw her qualify for the 100m butterfly final where she finished fifth, and to round off an excellent weekend she was reserve finalist for the freestyle event.

Peter Webster confirmed his position as the top 14-year-old backstroker in the region with a commanding win, and personal bests, in both heat and final.

His final winning time of 1 minute 02.90 seconds was more than a second quicker than his heat, and gave him the county title to go alongside the North Eastern Counties trophy won earlier this year. He was also a reserve finalist in the 200m individual medley.

In the same age group, Tom Davies became the squad's fastest-ever 100m freestyle swim-mer with a time of 59.99. Stuart Prior was reserve finalist in the 13-year 100m backstroke, the event giving him one of the five personal bests over the weekend.

Charlotte Black and Andrew Withers also had five personal bests and there were four for Andrew Cowan.

Every Tadcaster swimmer achieved at least one personal best time.

The other squad members were: Chloe Carter, Anna Horwell, Adam Milner, Claire Passmore, Felicity Prior, Carl Johnson, Amy Costello, Natalie Saunders, Luisa Horwell and Stef Poynter.
