LEADING upland farmer George Allison of Bilsdale, one of the founders of the successful Moors Quality Sheep Association says the group has been successful in improving the marketing of breeding sheep in the region by improving their appearance at the autumn sales and lifting their profile both locally and nationally.
Prices for breeding lambs at the sales have risen, added Mr Allison.
"There are all sorts of top quality things being produced in the national park which need to be given a higher profile, particularly to local people - lamb, beef, rare breed pork, bakery products, preserves, honey, seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as craft items. Even fishing, shooting and tourism are products of the national park.
"Supporting local producers keeps money circulating in the local economy rather than letting it drain out of the region. We need to make more of what is around us."
