The second round of the 122 peg Yorkshire Winter League saw the Calder around Mirfield in grim mood as the first frosts of winter hit home, writes Darren Starkey.
It was pegs on the Thornhill stretch below the Pear Tree Inn that dominated the frame as fish sought out the sanctuary of deeper water. Tim Harrison (Anglers World) led from peg 43. Alternating between waggler and stick float with bronze maggot he took around 20 small chub, ranging from a couple of ounces to over a pound for his 9-3-8.
A few pegs downstream on 45 was Normark's Andy Hampson who switched pole and waggler with caster and maggot for quality roach plus two bonus chub and 7-8-8.
Others: Bill Collier (Armley) 4-6-8; Steve Raper (Normark) 4-4-8; Paul Bennett (FAPS Bradford) 3-15-0; Terry Bailey (Leeds) 3-13-0.
Teams: Hirst Tackle 101; Normark 99; Marsh Tackle 91; Anglers World 90; Armley 88; FAPS Bradford 83.
League Anglers World and Hirst Tackle both 19; FAPS Bradford and Normark both 17; Armley 16; Marsh Tackle 15.
The Wharfe at Smaws Ings proved tricky for the 63 entry Tadcaster open with roach and dace failing to show in numbers.
Alistair Wilks (Tadcaster) had the match sewn up in the opening minutes when he cast a lobworm into peg 26 below the wood. A barbel of 7-0-0, which proved to be his only bite of the day, was enough for a first cast win.
Peter Smith (GB Angling) pole fished maggot in the deep corner on peg 38 where he took a mixed 5-3-0 of perch and odd roach. Perch also figured in Tony Baxby's (Tadcaster) 5-1-0.
Others: Paul Werrett (Leeds) 4-12-0; Colin Lofthouse (Leeds) 4-9-8; Harry Lockwood (Pontefract) 3-3-0.
After last week's bag up weights were down in the cold at Woodlands but the 71 entry still enjoyed brisk sport to keep the chill off. Pegs on Kestrel led the way for a change with Dave Harris (Cleveland Angling Centre) winning from peg 12. Fishing maggot and corn at five and 16 metres he netted carp to 7lb plus chub and barbel for his 56-11-0. Keith Kotchie (MAP Elton) fished the same tactics from Kestrel 25 for an all carp 48-9-0.
Others: John Chapman (Keenets NW) 48-8-0; Mal Bailey (Castleford) 45-11-0; Ken Ovenden (Cleveland Angling Centre) 43-13-0; Barry Kaye (Elton Tackle) 42-4-0.
Wednesday's open at Carpvale went to Bernard Guy (East End Park) who topped the 24 pegger with 34-12-0 of feeder caught carp from peg 12.
Others: John Royston (Leeds) 29-10-0; Andy Sparling (Armley) 28-4-0.
The opening match at Raker saw Paul Kozyra romp home from Horseshoe 16. Fishing long pole and meat the Anglers Corner man had an all carp 42-6-0.
Others: Andrew Lord ((KL Tackle) 15-12-0; John Cosgrove (Anglers Corner) 15-6-0.
