BY performing on a rooftop, the Railway Institute Golden Rail Band were following a long musical tradition. Israeli actor Topol famously fiddled on the roof on stage and film, and The Beatles climbed atop the Abbey Road studios for a spontaneous and, as it turned out, valedictory concert.
Mind you, their roofs did not belong to a blustery, autumnal Yorkshire skyline. So the Golden Rail Band can claim to have gone one better.
It bodes well for The York Millennium Symphony Of Bells And Brass tonight. This unique event is set to hit a high note that will ring out across York's rooftops.
