I MUST reply to the 'grand plan' for Haxby and Wigginton schools put forward by David Park and a letter from Denise Robinson in the Evening Press (October 16).
Mr Park contradicts himself by saying the library could be converted to a nursery facility and then states that moving the library would provide room for an Internet caf, reading room and social facility.
The library is not that big. I am sure the residents of Oaken Grove would object to business units appearing on their doorsteps.
Can he explain how "an exciting and dynamic future for the Oaken Grove site will reduce the heartache and sweeten the pill" to children aged five to 11? They cannot fully understand these concepts.
I moved schools as a child several times. It is not always easy for every child to fit in to a new school. They are all individuals.
Denise Robinson says Ralph Butterfield school was given an excellent OFSTED report. So was Oaken Grove. She states Ralph Butterfield have children coming from Strensall, New Earswick and Huntington.
Oaken Grove also has children from out of the area including Old Earswick and York.
Oaken Grove is an excellent small school on a large green site, bigger than Ralph Butterfield's. All my children have been happy in the nurturing, supportive environment.
Nobody should assume that any of the parents at Oaken Grove will automatically send their children to Ralph Butterfield just because it is the nearest.
No clear plans - whichever school closes - have been stated regarding the vacant site.
I asked for assurances that this land would not be developed for housing because this would potentially increase the school rolls.
The residents of Haxby and Wigginton need to know these details.
Mrs K A Stead,
Lowfield Drive,
Haxby, York.
