Forward on October 12 were 2,676 head of stock comprising 214 finished cattle including 62 young bulls, 1,615 finished sheep, including 1,297 lambs and 318 ewes, 847 finished pigs including 159 sows and boars.
Cattle: A larger entry of cattle with quality very mixed, including a fair proportion of beasts which were overfat, met a good trade. Top prices of 128.5p and 123.5p were for heifers from W H Barker and Son, Scotton, with 123.5p also from R K M Teasdale and Sons, Rievaulx, and 106.5p from R Bowman, Roecliffe. Steers reached 116.5p from A Bell, Old Byland, and heavyweights brought 100.5p from G Dailes and Son, Elwick. Bulls were a firmer trade with a top price of 104.5p and 103.5p from W Dixon and Son, Raskelf, 104.5p from I Armitage, Oswaldkirk, 103.5p from R and K M Teasdale and Son and 101.5p from Bentley Bros, Old Byland. Forward on October 16 was a record entry of 1,110 suckled calves and overyear sucklers at this season's first suckled calf sale held by Richardson and Smith at Ruswarp Market on Wednesday and Thursday. Similar numbers of cattle were sold on each day. On Wednesday, a very firm trade was experienced for all stock with bulls on green CIDs being in particularly keen demand. On Thursday, most bulls were an easier trade but heifers and bullocks, especially those on blue cards, were keenly sought after and were dearer than on the previous day and almost total clearance was affected.
Prices were: Bulls, Ch to £470 (£367.26, -£11.07), Lim to £450 (£343.74, -£12.56), Sim to £475 (£368.94, -£10), BB to £430 (£334.95, -£44.81), Saler to £450 (£382.33, +£6.58).
