It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for York RUFC youth section with some fine performances in the different age groups.
The Under-7s up to Under-12s were visitors to the Pocklington Festival and had a good day, enjoying some notable victories.
A good all round performance from the Under-7s saw them beat Bridlington 25-15 and then go on to run out victors against an improving Walkington 15-5. They then faced a mixed Under-7 and Under-8s side from Pocklington.
York played extremely well and with a minute to go the scores were level at 5-5, however a spilled ball near Pocklington's line led to a breakaway and last gasp try by the home club, leaving a final scoreline of 5-10.
York's try scorers were Sebastian Murgatroyd, Stuart Leigh, Josh Harland, Charlie George, Dudley Snook and Oliver Snook (4).
The Under-8s continued their 12-month unbeaten string of victories, although their play at times was ragged and lacking in structure.
They beat Pocklington 35-20 with some fine individual performances, particularly from Jack Maud and Dudley Snook. They then beat a relatively inexperienced Walkington 30-10, although the margin of victory could have been far greater had their teamwork been more cohesive.
York's tries were by Daniel Harrison, Jack Maud (6), Lee Walker (2), Dudley Snook (2) and Charlie Greenwood.
York Under-9s displayed a Jeckyl and Hyde character in their games.
A good team performance with some excellent passing and tackling saw them beat a strong Bridlington side by 20-15. However, they contrived to convert all their strengths from that game into weaknesses against Pocklington and they lost 25-5 in a game they were capable of winning.
York's tries were scored by Thomas Brown, Ben Hepworth, Liam Killen and Toby Spark (2).
The Under-10s were disappointed that, due to the lack of opposition, they did not have a game.
The all conquering Under-11s continued to dominate their age group with a comprehensive 26-0 victory over Pocklington.
This was an excellent all-round team performance with the forwards winning good possession and the backs making the most of the clean ball they were presented with.
The tackling was purposeful and effective with Pocklington unable to breach the solid York defence. Tries were scored by Andy Fraser, Gareth Singleton, Oliver Hawkings and William Ashman, with conversions by Andy Fraser, Ross White and William Simpson.
The Under-12s displayed the same contradictions that afflicted the Under-9s.
A combination of strong individual performances and excellent kicking saw them beat Bridlington by 42-0.
However, their inability to play as a team meant that they could not match a very strong and well drilled Pocklington side and despite battling well they went down 49-0.
York's tries came from Nick Fidler, Callum Buck (2), Jonathon Brown, David Rotherham and Seamus Lucey.
