A former Mayor of an East Yorkshire town has died.
Coun John McGregor had been Mayor of Market Weighton 12 times, and was serving as Deputy Mayor this year.
His death followed a short illness. He had been a member of Market Weighton Town Council since its formation in 1974. Previously, he served on the parish council.
Current Mayor, Stephen King, said: "He was a very long-serving member of the council and a very well-known man in Market Weighton."
Coun Michael Seaward was chosen to take over as Deputy Mayor, but Coun McGregor's death leaves a second vacancy on Market Weighton Town Council. The first followed the resignation of Coun Robert Cartwright.
The vacancies mean by-elections could take place if ten electors in the town contact the council in writing by October 25 saying that they want one. If notice is not received, a member of the community will be co-opted onto the council at its next meeting in December.
Anybody wanting to call for a by-election is asked to contact the returning officer at Market Weighton Town Council, 43a Market Place, Market Weighton, York YO43 3AJ.
