DAN Rutstein quite rightly points out that the Rose and Crown, Lawrence Street, has become a haunt for York University students ('Welcome mat out as York Students return', October 9). He should have added "to the detriment of the locals".

Ever since this pub was "themed" in the mid-90s takings have plummeted because the volume drinkers (locals) no longer imbibe there.

Apart from The Last Drop Inn on Colliergate every bar opened in this city since the Slug And Lettuce first started trading has been geared to the "young professional" (your words not mine).

I have never understood why a group of people who are only residents for 30 weeks out of the year are given such special treatment, discounts, and so on. The local unemployed are not so fortunate.

Even the Spread Eagle on Walmgate has been run down to such an extent that it is ripe for a new theme. I wonder what that could be? Andrew Miller,
