YESTERDAY the idea of permanently closing Lendal Bridge to traffic was given a test drive by City of York Council. Today Evening Press readers mounted a road block.
They voted by three-to-one against the suggestion. The argument that the closed bridge eased jams elsewhere did not impress most of our voters.
Council officers are still going to investigate the ramifications of the plan. But it will have to undertake a pretty nifty manoeuvre to reverse out of this cul-de-sac of public opinion.
