BILL Bailey, the long-haired, great-bearded comedian, is in York tomorrow night to perform his stand-up show at the Grand Opera House.
Each week this autumn season, Bailey is to be spotted playing an accountant-turned-bookseller in Black Books, the surreal sitcom newly installed in Channel 4's traditional Friday night comedy slot.
If his role as Manny Bianco has newly heightened Bailey's profile - rather more than his appearance in the film Saving Grace earlier this year - then he had already attained the stamp of approval of his peers. Last year he won the Best Live Stand Up award in the British Comedy Awards.
On his countrywide tour, the 35-year-old Englishman will be presenting a blend of raucous music and comedy rooted in detailed observation of popular culture.
"Every gig is an adventure," he says." "I like to challenge an audience and see where it can go with it." Any examples, Bill? "Oh, let's talk about the history of skittles; let's see if we can find that funny."
If Bailey's mad-eyed turn in Black Books fits your comedy bill, then here is the good news: tickets are still available for tomorrow's 7.30pm gig at £12.50 and £10.50 on 01904 671818.
