Bellringer David Potter was set to receive an MBE from the Queen today.
Mr Potter was granted the decoration in the New Years Honours List in recognition of his 30 years' work as a bell-ringer at York Minster.
During that period, Mr Potter became one of the country's best-known ringers and was ringing master at the Minster for 25 years.
When he came to York in 1969, some of the city's bells were derelict and others had disappeared through bombing, theft or church demolition. Mr Potter worked tirelessly to revive the centuries-old change-ringing tradition in York, training new ringers and restoring or replacing bells such as those in Clifton, St Olave's (Marygate), and St Wilfrid's (Duncombe Place) and overseeing the return of bells to St Laurence's Church, off Lawrence Street. Mr Potter was the subject of a police investigation earlier this year. No charges were brought.
He resigned as ringing master earlier this year, although he is still a bell-ringer. He also resigned from his post as a teacher at Upper Poppleton Junior School in July.
