A SECOND-HALF comeback by Pocklington was not enough to prevent them tumbling out of the Intermediate Cup at the hands of Goole.

The unbeaten hosts enjoyed a 22-15 victory after having the better of the first half, and then holding off Pock's second-half surge.

Pocklington scored two tries to Goole's one, but the home side went through thanks to their kicking five penalties, generated by their tight tactics in the difficult conditions.

In incessant rain, Goole were content to hoist high kicks into the Pocklington half and wait for the penalties to come.

They duly did and James Ruhmann put over five goals from a variety of positions in addition to converting a support try by centre Steve Grimbleby.

Pocklington spent much of the first 45 minutes on the defence and found themselves 19 points adrift with their only score coming from a Gary Pearce penalty.

But they then took over the initiative to bombard the home line with a series of attacks.

Goole somehow held out, but had two forwards sin-binned for consistently killing the ball.

Pocklington finally scored a try in the last quarter when they drove a lineout and lock Simon Lewis peeled off to touch down, Pearce converting.

Soon afterwards, Pocklington forwards drove up the left and the ball was swung right for wing Richard Stephenson to slide over in the corner.

That set up an interesting last few minutes with Pocklington having hopes of overhauling their opponents.

But Goole closed the game down again and maintained their winning margin to the end.

Wetherby went out of the Tetley's Vase to Stanley Rodillians in a tight game at Grange Park. The visitors, who were 8-7 ahead at half time, won 15-13, thanks to tries by lock John Peach and winger Rob Lewis and a Neil Sayner conversion and penalty.

Craig Maxwell, son of former England international Andy Maxwell, scored a try for Wetherby and Kevin Ellis touched down another, Simon Martin adding a penalty.

In the Intermediate Cup, Ripon triumphed 20-6 over Bradford Salem for whom Jay Simpson scored two penalty goals.

For Ripon, Neil Whitaker and his son, George, scored tries, Scott McCarra converting both and kicking three penalties.

In a delayed Yorkshire Two league game, Northallerton were held to a 10-10 draw at Dinnington and would have been beaten had Dinnington's marksman kicked a last-minute penalty.

Ian Thompson converted a try by lock Neil Beevers and added a penalty, North replying with a try by Ed Bulman and an unconverted try by Richard Darling.

In a non-league match, Scarborough beat Whitby 15-3 at Newby with tries through right winger Carl Holdsworth and Kiwi Marcus Edwards, who kicked a conversion and a penalty, Lee Taylor scoring a penalty for the visitors.
