I FULLY agree with the need for measures to be taken to protect cyclists on our roads (September 30). However, let us not forget that while they are the most vulnerable of road-users, cyclists are often viewed by the safest drivers as being their own worst enemies.

Cyclists seem to make their own rules: overtaking on the inside, often using a car, or worse, a lorry or bus, to push themselves along.

They swerve in front of other vehicles, often without any hand-signals, and instead of stopping at lights, sometimes dismount from their bicycle, push it across the road and resume riding on the other side. They often, too, ride two abreast, causing car drivers to swerve to the other side of the road to pass them.

By all means, create safe paths for cyclists, but do not view them always as the victims of accidents. They are often the cause. When a cyclist is knocked from their bicycle, the driver of the larger vehicle is always seen as the villain, though this is not necessarily the case.
