FULFORD'S Steve Dunn won the York Union of Golf Clubs' Matchplay Championship with a narrow win over David Holder, of The York.
Dunn won two and one in a tight final at Malton and Norton after two equally close semi-finals.
Holder found himself three holes down after Dunn snapped up birdies at the fifth, sixth and eighth holes to reach the turn in one under par 35.
Holder fought back with birdies at the 13th and 14th holes to reduce the deficit, but a mistake at the 15th enabled Dunn to extend his lead to two.
Each bogeyed the 16th and then the pair both parred at 17 leaving Dunn as champion.
In the morning Dunn had squeezed past Martin Brown (Pike Hills) as the match went down to the last hole.
Dunn was three up after nine holes, a lead he maintained until the 15th. Two pars by Brown at 16 and 17 cut the lead to one hole but he missed a four-foot birdie chance at the last which would have taken the tie in to extra holes, enabling Dunn to scrape into the final.
In the other semi, Darren Rix (Malton and Norton) put up a spirited fight against his senior opponent, Holder winning two and one.
Rix was three down after eight holes but fought back to one down at the 16th before a poor tee shot at the short 17th left him in a difficult position and the game was over.
Harrogate's Fran Hutchinson and Dorothy Whiteley (Scarcroft) won Harrogate and District Society of Lady Captains' Millennium Invitation Day at Pannal.
They triumphed in the fourball betterball stableford competition with 42 points, one ahead of runners-up Rosie Page (Thirsk and Northallerton) and Aileen Carter (Dinsdale Spa).
Eileen Corn (Pannal) won the society's Cecile Poyser Trophy for winning the autumn meeting at Otley with a gross score of 81.
