NORTH Yorkshire missed out as greats from the field of showbiz, sport, the arts and business were honoured in a Yorkshire Awards ceremony, held at the Hilton hotel in Leeds last night.
The awards, organised and run by The Yorkshire Awards Committee, are now in their 12th year and involve some of the region's leading companies and organisations.
With the help of the Yorkshire public, the committee named those outstanding individuals whose examples act as inspiration to anyone with the interests of Yorkshire at heart.
Sheffield's Michael Palin, the Monty Python star-turned globetrotter, picked up Yorkshire Man of the Year, while soprano Lesley Garrett, who hails from Doncaster, picked up the female equivalent. Young motorcyclist Dougie Lampkin, from Keighley, won the sporting achievement award, while Hull writer John Godber and businessman Arnold Ziff also picked up gongs.
The Yorkshire Unsung Hero Award was won by Audrey Farnell, from The Federation of Disability Sport, based in Halifax.
