MATHS was shrugging off its stereotypical 'boring' tag today as the subject was brought to life in York. The Coppergate Centre was the venue for the first event of a two-week York MathFest, which was launched by the Sheriff of York., Coun Barrie Ferguson. Adults and children were entertained by mathematical balloon modellers and jugglers, while they had to get their thinking caps on to solve puzzles. Pupils from Scarcroft Primary School performed a Maths Dance, while people challenged each other to a giant game of Connect 4. Facepainters drew mathematical designs on children's faces and there was also the chance to draw a design which could be printed on hundreds of mugs. The York MathFest will also include free maths activities at the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet next Saturday, between 10am and 4pm, and at the Clifton Moor Centre outside Tesco next Sunday, also between 10am and 4pm.

Meanwhile, there will be a free talk by Rob Eastaway called Maths and Magic at 5.30pm on Wednesday at Temple Anderson Hall, in the Museum Gardens.
