I WAS dismayed to read in the Evening Press of the plight of SNAPPY, an organisation with which I was involved for many years and which, over recent years, has gone from strength to strength thanks to the excellent guidance and initiative of Anne Pemberton.
I was one of the parents who was there at the outset of the SNAPPY organisation and know only too well the problems and heartache of coping with school holidays with a handicapped child. My daughter, along with many other handicapped youngsters, just adored their two weeks at SNAPPY in the summer. Families planned their holidays around the SNAPPY Playscheme and we soon wondered how we ever survived without it.
Since those early days SNAPPY has progressed so much and I have been delighted to hear about the Youth Projects, Senior SNAPPY, the various holidays etc, all of which are so necessary for these young people who have so much to offer, given the opportunity. We always depended on the generosity of local businesses, grants, funding from local councils and of course, the wonderful volunteers without which SNAPPY could never have survived.
York must never lose SNAPPY. This organisation should be shouted from the rooftops and of course, it is a disgrace that they should be having to beg for money to keep it afloat. I know that Anne and the SNAPPY committee will not give up easily and I just hope that everyone in York gets behind them and helps in any ways they know how.
