A NEW £14 million distribution centre for IKEA is being built by York-based Shepherd Construction in Doncaster.
Shepherd is using fast-track design and build techniques to ensure that the 61,000 square metres of warehousing will be ready within 40 weeks.
The development is part of an ambitious 10 year building programme announced by IKEA to boost even further its £750 million worth of sales in Britain each year - and will be necessary as 20 new stores open, creating 10,000 new jobs.
Shepherd's design features a central 20 metre high bay area to accommodate 12 pallet levels, with 10 metre low bay areas either side on six pallet levels. Other features will include 50 loading doors, 200 lorry parking bays and space for 240 cars.
