YORK Tennis Club Men's team edged home 5-4 in their final match of the Yorkshire League against Driffield at Clifton Park and so ensured they will play again in division one next season.
Steve Smith and Darren Ferre played a crucial role in ensuring York's safety, winning all three of their rubbers. Peter Goodall and Paul Blackett won one, as did third pair Andy Margarson and Tony Precious.
York won three of their seven fixtures and will finish in mid-table. A defeat against Driffield would have meant a struggle for survival in the top division.
York women's team ended their division one Yorkshire League season with a 6-3 defeat at Rastrick, several of their players looking jaded after their exertions in the previous day's City of York Championships.
Tamsin Bush and Becky Fong were York's best pair with a win and a half.
