A MYSTERY benefactor has stepped in with a £50,000 gift to help combat flooding at Norton.
Ryedale District Council heard last night the money was given anonymously to get flood alleviation work under way before winter.
Coun Elizabeth Shields, chairman of the environment, health and housing committee said: "It is a most generous offer".
But she said the council should "top up" any additional funding which may be needed for the scheme to end flooding at the northern end of Welham Road.
Coun Allin Jenkins said additional street sweeping and gutter cleaning was needed in the most vulnerable areas.
"It is important that this work is done because the trauma which has been suffered by families has to be seen to be believed."
But Coun David Cussons, the council chairman, said the main drains and the rivers needed clearing. "That is the main problem," he added.
Kathleen Youngson, whose Welham Road home in Norton was flooded in March last year, said she was delighted. "I would like to see the work completed before the winter if possible," she said.
