IN Britain there are a few classic views which represent our country throughout the world.

They are the views used by travel companies to promote tourism, scenes which cause pangs of homesickness among Brits living abroad.

These are photographs of such landmarks as Tower Bridge, Ann Hathaway's Cottage, Edinburgh Castle - all recognised the world over.

I count Clifford's Tower among these classics. To surround it by mediocre modern buildings should not be allowed.

The people of York marvel that the Stonebow development was given approval.

Are we going to allow the same errors of judgement to happen again?

We have a treasure that no other city in Britain has so let us make sure we treasure it and give it pride of place, not hide it in the backyard of a shopping complex.
