The Wharfe Championships drew only 55 to the river at Tadcaster and Ulleskelf. The fishing was as poor as the turnout, with Steve Smith (Airborough) needing just 13lb 8oz for victory.

Drawn at the top of Tadcaster shallows he wagglered caster and grub for 6 chub, a barbel and some dace.

Alan Grandage (Pontefract) took second spot from the culvert peg at Kirby Wharfe where his feeder caster attack located a brace of bream for his 12-0.

Ian Walker (Lower Wharfe Angling) was third with a barbel plus dace on stick and caster from the bottom of the rapids for a straight 10-0.

Others; Dave Hutchinson (Leeds) 9-0; Bob Cramner (Team Daiwa Armley Angling) and Clive Stokes (Selby) both 8-14.

The Ure at Ripon was still heavily coloured following last week's landslide at Appersett and most of the 48 entry struggled in the deep water sections below Ripon.

John Martin (Leeds) was sitting above the diving board, where he used a maggot feeder taking five eels plus roach perch and dace on single maggot for his 5-4.

Others: Tommy Pitts (Marsh Tackle) and Pete Miller (Marsh Tackle) both 3-10; Tony Neesom (Ripon) 3-8; Steve Pearson (Normark) 3-2.
