IF we villagers in Rufforth are suffering from a feeling of dj vu, it is hardly surprising. Over the years we have had to contend with the original tip, proposed racetrack, proposed BSE cattle incinerator and now the tip has come back to haunt us all over again.
What are all these so called "experts" thinking of? They readily admit "there would be a slight increase in lorry movements and an increase by cars and vans" (Evening Press, August 31).
What does 'slight' mean? I believe it is proposed to deal with 250,000 tons of waste each year. By anyone's reckoning that's an awful lot of vehicles - and on a road already notorious for accidents.
On Sunday mornings the traffic queues back along the Wetherby Road towards York. We have even been asked by people waiting in the queue if there has been an accident. There is genuine shock when we explain that this is just the normal Sunday morning queue for the car boot sale at the other end of the village.
And now there are plans to make the queues even worse by the addition of household waste disposal traffic. I suggest visits to the village on Sunday mornings for a few weeks would enable a more accurate re-calculation of traffic predictions. No intelligent, community-spirited person is going to argue against waste being disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way, but adding to an existing traffic problem cannot be the solution.
There must be a better place for this type of operation where traffic can move freely and, most importantly, safely.
