YORK City sharpshooter Peter Duffield is becoming increasingly expensive for the Minstermen.

It has been revealed that when the 31-year-old signed from Darlington this summer, City agreed to pay the Quakers a fee linked to his goal scoring feats at Bootham Crescent.

Duffield's third strike of the season earned City a draw at Feethams on Saturday, after which Darlington chairman George Reynolds reportedly said that the Quakers were receiving £1,000 each time the pint-sized striker hit the net.

And City chairman Douglas Craig today confirmed: "Peter Duffield did not join us on a free transfer.

"He joined us on an agreement whereby Darlington are paid certain sums of money depending on his goal scoring record, although there's more to the contract than a simple amount of money per goal."

Duffield's other goals this season came in the 4-1 defeat at Cheltenham - the fastest goal in the Football League this season - and in the 1-1 draw at Carlisle.

And of the penalty scored on his return to Feethams on Saturday, the striker said: "It was a pressure kick so early in the game in front of the Tin Shed. And it was against Andy (Collett) who's a good friend of mine. If he had saved it he would have been laughing."

Duffield said there was no doubt that referee Eddie Wolstenholme was correct in pointing to the spot. "I got fouled definitely, and my legs are black and blue to prove it," he said.

"A few of our players thought the goalkeeper should have been sent off, and nine times out of ten he tends to walk. But I didn't have a clue where the ball had gone, and the ref said the 'keeper wasn't the last man."

Duffield admitted he was delighted with the ovation he received from the home supporters as he was substituted late on, saying: "I was a bit apprehensive about how the Darlington fans would react to me but the reception I got was special."
