A FAMILY-run York music shop is singing for joy after being voted overwhelmingly the best store of its kind by consumers in a national survey.
Banks Music, in Lendal, has been selling sheet music to budding Beethovens for almost 250 years and has now won a Consumers' Choice Gold Award following the survey.
Eighty-five percent of consumers surveyed voted Banks the top musical instrument and music shop in the UK.
Owner Jan Thorpe said: "We run a good business with old fashioned values - our customers come from Great Britain and all over the world to take advantage of our highly knowledgeable staff and the outstanding service we provide. The Consumers' Choice Gold Award tells us exactly what our customers tell us all the time - that we are the best at providing this specialist service."
The shop has only recently reopened following renovation work to modernise the premises.
Managing director of Consumer Choice Company, Uzi Sharon, said: "The remarkably high vote for Banks Music is a good example of the strong bond between consumers and local independent retailers in York."
